Oxygen concentration in Air is 21%. However oxygen can be displaced by other gases depending on the environment you are in.
Oxygen displacement or deficiency shall be due to leaking materials from storage tanks, natural gas lines, process valves etc.
Decomposing organic matter, such as animal, human or plant waste, produces methane, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide that displace oxygen.
When Oxygen level falls below 19.5%, health hazards may occur, with few breaths of oxygen deficient air leading to suffocation or even unconsciousness.
Confined spaces prohibit natural ventilation preventing gases from escaping. Explosive and toxic gases, including hydrogen sulfide and carbon monoxide, combined with a lack of oxygen, are the cause of most confined space accidents.
By tracking Oxygen levels, gas leaks can be detected eventhough leaking gas cannot be seen or smelled.
To facilitate the safety of human lives and plant, Portable and Fixed gas detectors are available which can monitor and keep a log on the gas levels with provision to set safety Alarms. Analyzing the logged data of gas monitors can help in identifying oxygen depleted zones helping in eliminating any untoward incident.
In case of confined space portable detectors with pump should be used to suck the air to evaluate presence of Toxic gases, before entering the confined space.
Happy Learning.
